Nursery and seedlings
Nordmanns Fir sows are held in early spring. Seeds we use are from fir trees which are growing in the Caucasus; they are considered as some of the genetically best and are most suitable, because they grow out of the best quality trees.
The photograph shows one-year old seedlings of Abies Nordmanniana fir 2/1.
In the first year after the sowing, we are dealing with diseases, strengthening seedling with special fertilizers, removing weeds and watering.
In the second year, we are making cuts to the roots and replanting little firs wider, they will gain better characterization of the roots and more space between seedlings, which is needed for correct growth.
Because our firs are grown in nursery, which is outside, rather in the greenhouses, the young seedlings of conifers are more resistant to weather and disease.
After 3 years, seedlings are prepared for planting at field or for sale. All of them are getting classified into different quality classes, like 1st, 2nd or 3rd class, depending on construction of the stem, number of buds, growth.
Seedling classes are very important when we want to establish or we are already running a plantation, because they are relevant in a future normal growth, and future sales.
For example, you can purchase Caucasian fir which is from Turkey; this type of fir is not suitable for Christmas tree cultivation. His main characteristic is rapid growth, which unfortunately results in large gaps between the layers of branches, so tree lose his form, typical for Caucasian fir.
